How do we give housing agency to the city and its residents?

We all know that housing in Aotearoa is in crisis. Whether it’s housing quality, cost or the fact that a growing number of people are living alone, the current approach to housing is not addressing these key issues.

Increased public interest and media coverage has brought the topic into greater focus. There are significant challenges presented by the current housing market and the standard approach to developing housing. There’s appetite for new solutions that shift away from speculation and promote equitable, sustainable, collective models of housing.

Our research and local projects have shown that there is a distinct demand for alternative housing models that prioritise:

  • Affordability
  • Community cohesion and agency
  • Sustainability & Resilience

Our hui will include international and local experts, stories from papa kāinga as well as long standing and emerging CoHousing groups. Following a series of presentations, participants will be invited to collectively explore the questions from the day, which may include:

What responsibilities come with community? How do we balance the private and the collective?
- How can we realise the expertise we already have between us?
- How do we leverage existing financial and legal models to ensure affordability over time?
- How do we access land?

- Defining NZ pathways: what’s next?

Join us in Wellington on February the 12th, 2019.
